Flor Contemplacion

Flor R. Contemplacion (born January 1953 in San Pablo City , Laguna , Philippines , † March 17, 1995 in Singapore ) was a Filipino maid who was executed in Singapore for double homicide . Relations between the Philippines and Singapore deteriorated as a result of this execution .

In Singapore, on May 4, 1991, the Filipino maid Delia Maga was strangled and the four-year-old Nicholas Huang was found drowned. Although Nicholas' father could not name a suspect, the police learned of Flor Contemplacion through Maga's diary. Contemplacion immediately admitted the act. The Philippine Embassy in Singapore held the statements of credible and Contemplacion was because of double murder to death by the strand convicted. Shortly before her execution, Flor Contemplacion had withdrawn her confession and asserted that she had been coerced into making this confession. In addition, two Filipino witnesses made statements that pointed to the father of the drowned boy as the perpetrator. However, the court attached no importance to this and the execution was carried out.

Reactions

The execution caused violent reactions, especially in the Philippines. Among other things, the mayor Rodrigo Duterte lit a flag of Singapore in Davao City . Communist terror groups have threatened attacks on Singaporean facilities. The Philippine President Fidel Ramos threatened the severance of international relations, but later withdrew this threat.

50,000 people attended the funeral of Flor Contemplacion.

The Contemplacion case brought the situation of Filipinos working abroad into the focus of media interest. Since he had not prevented the execution, the Philippine Foreign Minister Roberto Romulo had to resign on April 17, 1995 .
