Florence Senanayake
DMF Senanayake ( Sinhala ඩී. එම්. එෆ්. සේනානායක ; born Daisy Maria Florence Mendis on June 19, 1903 in Rawatawatta , Moratuwa , Ceylon ; died on December 3, 1988 ) was a Sri Lankan politician and the first from 1947 to 1952 Member of the Ceylon Parliament (since 1972 Sri Lanka ).
Life
Florence Senanayake was born the daughter of a planter . In 1925 she married Reginald (Reggie) S. Vincent Senanayake (1898-1946). With him she campaigned for the country's independence in a Youth League since 1934 . Reggie Senanayake founded the Trotskyist Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) in 1935 and took over the office of treasurer until 1939 . The family fled to India in 1942 . He was a member of the Bolshevik-Leninist Party of India (BLPI) and was expelled to Ceylon after his arrest in July 1943.
The widowed Florence Senanayake won the Kiriella and Ratnapura constituency in the first parliamentary elections in Ceylon in August 1947 with 35.5 percent of the vote against five other male candidates and became the first woman in the country that had become independent to enter parliament for the Lanka Sama Samaja Party . An independent candidate was Ayesha Rauf in Colombo Central . In the following elections in May 1952 Senanayake lost her seat to the candidate of the ruling United National Party (UNP).
Florence Senanayake died on December 3, 1988. She had six children.
