Florens Schoonhoven ( Latin Florentius Schoonhovius , Dutch Floris van Schoonhoven ; *  1594 in Gouda , † September 1648 ibid) was a Dutch lawyer and poet.

Life

Florens Schoonhoven was the son of multiple Gouda mayor Dirck Jacobsz. Schoonhoven and Niesje Verharst, daughter of the former mayor of Gouda, Floris Gysberse Verharst. Schoonhoven, who had six sisters, attended the Latin school in Gouda with Wilhelmus Traudenius and then studied law in Leiden . After graduating, he began an educational trip to Orléans in the summer of 1614 , where he received his doctorate on November 10th that year. At the end of his educational trip, he returned to Gouda, where he established himself as a lawyer. His marriage to Annetgen Thomasdr on August 7, 1616 resulted in several children, three of whom survived their father.

Jasper Tournay printed his Latin poems (Emblemata) in close collaboration with Andreas Burier in Gouda. Jacob van Zevecote translated them into Dutch ( Emblemata ofte Sinnebeelden met Dichten verciert , 1626 and 1638).

Schoonhoven converted to Catholicism in later years. This is probably the reason why he - unlike his father (several times between 1611 and 1616) and his father-in-law (1578–1579) - did not become mayor of Gouda. He died in September 1648 and was buried in the Gouda Sint Janskerk .
