Florian Pasetti

Florian Ritter von Pasetti (* 1793 ; † 1875 in Vienna ) was the Austrian Danube Regulation Commissioner and Imperial Councilor .

In 1830 there was a devastating flood of the Danube , which led to the desire for effective flood protection. However, nothing was done in the following years. In 1848 Karl Ludwig von Bruck was appointed Minister of Commerce. He recognized the economic and urban development advantages of regulating the Danube and pushed this project forward. At his instigation, a first commission was set up to work out appropriate proposals. A majority in the commission proposed a new flow management in a single concave curved bed. A small but powerful group around Section Head Florian von Pasetti, however, planned three branches of the Danube: the main stream, the Danube Canal and the Kaiserwasser. Pasetti was determined opponent of a Danube breakthrough, which he considered technically impossible. His influence prevented an agreement within the commission. With the resignation of Bruck in 1851, the work of the commission came to a standstill.

Another flood disaster in 1862 triggered the regulation of the Danube. Pasetti became a member of the second commission appointed by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1864 , but it was not convened until 1866. Again there was disagreement as to the best solution. Pasetti advocated a variant of Danube regulation remote from the city and was able to block an agreement within the commission. Pasetti retired in 1868. For 20 years he prevented two commissions from reaching an agreement, which shows the influence of this councilor. Only then was it possible within the commission to quickly agree on a proposal that ultimately led to the first Viennese regulation on the Danube .

Pasetti is buried in the Hietzingen cemetery in Vienna in an honorary grave (group 6, no. 70).
