Floyd Morris

Floyd Emerson Morris (born July 23, 1969 in Bailey's Vale , Port Maria , Saint Mary Parish , Jamaica ) is a Jamaican politician of the People's National Party (PNP) who has served as the first blind president of the Senate of Jamaica since 2013 .

Life

Morris, son of a fireman and a seamstress, grew up with seven siblings. After attending Port Maria Primary School and St Mary High School, he completed a degree in communication science at the University of the West Indies (UWI), from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Mass Communication). He then completed a postgraduate degree in philosophy at the UWI with a Master of Arts (MA Philosophy) and was then a clergyman (Reverend) of the Seventh-day Adventists and founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of the consulting company FE Morris International Consultancy Services (FEMICS).

In addition, Morris, who has been blind since he was 17, has been committed to the social inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas of life for years, for example as coordinator and head of the Center for the Study of Disabilities at UWI and since 1995 as Member of the National Advisory Board for People with Disabilities.

In 1998, Morris was first elected a Senator for the People's National Party (PNP) and served in the Senate until 2007. During that time, he served as Prime Minister Percival J. Patterson and Portia Simpson Miller's tenure between 2001 and 2007 as Secretary of State at the Department of Labor and Social Security.

Morris, who since 2011 Moderator of the of "Seeing from a Different Perspective", a radio show on Newstalk 93 FM and on his dissertation for a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. writes) at the UWI was in 2012 as a candidate of the ruling PNP Senator again.

On May 17, 2013, Morris became President of the Senate, making him the first blind man to become President of the Senate of Jamaica. As President of the Senate, he chairs the Senate Committees for Rules of Procedure and for Privileges.
