The Cheongju Airport ( Korean 청주 국제 공항 ) is an international airport and base of the South Korean Air Force near the city of Cheongju in the province of North Chungcheong in South Korea .

Military airport

The airfield was in 1978 as a military airfield of the South Korean Air Force was founded. Today the 17th Fighter Wing with three flying squadrons is stationed in the military part of the airfield .

All three squadrons were equipped with the F-4E Phantom II for years . At the end of March 2019, the first two copies of the successor model F-35A Lightning II arrived on the base.

Civil use

The first considerations for civil use of the site were summarized in the construction plan from 1984. There were also considerations to develop the airfield into Korea's most important international airport, but the decision was made in favor of Incheon International Airport . Construction work lasted from April 1992 to December 1996. It opened as an international airport in April 1997. In 2011, 1,337,791 passengers used the airport.

At the moment (February 2016) there are flights to Jeju Island , China , Japan , Taiwan and Thailand .
