The Palermo-Boccadifalco Airport is the old airport in the Sicilian capital Palermo . The international airport of Palermo-Punta Raisi is 35 km west of the city .

history

The history of aviation in Palermo begins in the suburb of Mondello and in the Parco della Favorita , from where hot air balloons and finally airships occasionally took off in the 19th century . The city's first airfield was built there in 1910 . This was followed by the Campo Marasà airfield and, from 1926, the Boccadifalco airfield, which was inaugurated in 1931 and in the years that followed mainly as a military airfield . At that time, commercial air traffic in Palermo was also handled with flying boats .

After the Second World War, the Palermo-Boccadifalco Airport served as the city's commercial airport. As the airport soon became too small for the new commercial aircraft and was no longer able to cope with the number of passengers, the decision was made to build the new Palermo-Punta Raisi airport, which opened in 1960. The Aeroclub Palermo, founded in 1922, general aviation , flying units of several security and civil protection authorities and military departments remained at Boccadifalco Airport . Until 2009 the airport was under the control of the Italian Air Force , today it is managed by the civil aviation authority ENAC .

Infrastructure

The airfield is located on the western outskirts at around 100 meters above sea level. It has an asphalt runway (17/35) that runs in north-south direction and is around 1200 meters long. The handling facilities for general aviation are to the west of the runway. The city center can be easily reached via Via Giuseppe Pitrè , other parts of the city and the wider area via the nearby ring road .
