The Qimei airport ( Chinese  七美機場 , pinyin Qimei Jīchǎng ) is a small airport in the Republic of China (Taiwan) . It is located on the island of Qimei, which belongs to the Penghu Islands (Pescadors).

history

In the 1970s, the Penghu administrative authorities decided to build an airport on Qimei Island to improve air transport links to the islands. In 1977 the airport opened. The only scheduled connections existed between the airport on the neighboring island of Magong, also opened in 1977, and Kaohsiung Airport . Scheduled traffic was initially operated by Yong-Xing Airlines (renamed Formosa Airlines in 1987 ). From 1998 Taiwan Airlines (merged into Uni Air from 1998 ) was added.

In 1991, Qimei Airport was administratively subordinated to the neighboring Magong Airport . On May 11, 1996, airport operations were transferred from Penghu County to the Taiwan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). In 1993/94 a new airport building was built and in 1996 the aging runway made of asphalt was replaced by a runway made of concrete.

Current situation

Currently, Uni Air is the only scheduled flight connection to have regular flights to and from the airport on the neighboring island of Magong and to Kaohsiung Airport . In 2016, 16,074 passengers were carried.

Aviation accidents

So far there have been no major accidents at or near the airport.
