The Vlora International Airport ( English Vlora International Airport , Albanian  Aeroporti Ndërkombëtar i Vlorës ) is an airport project north of the southern Albanian port city of Vlora in Albania .

The construction of an international airport is being personally sponsored by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan , who was also involved in founding Albania's national airline , Air Albania .

The airport is planned to be on the site of the Akërnia Air Force Base, 23 kilometers north of Vlorë . It is a decommissioned Air Force reserve airfield with a grass runway. The runway of the Vlora airfield (Baza Ajrore Vlorë) , which was the base of the Vlora Air Force Academy until the 1990s, has now been destroyed and the site has been partially built over.

Vlora Airport is planned as the third international airport in Albania. Today only Tirana Airport is served by scheduled flights, while Kukës Airport has not yet started flight operations. The planners expect that Vlorë Airport will have a positive impact on the economic upswing in southern Albania and the promotion of tourism in the region. They reckon with around 600,000 passengers per year.

On January 17, 2018, the Turkish consortium building the New Istanbul Airport offered to help build Vlorë Airport as part of a regional development project. At the same time, the Turkish government is supporting the establishment of the national airline Air Albania through the state-owned airline Turkish Airlines .

Construction should be completed in 2020, it said in June 2018. In July of the same year, the Turkish ambassador in the Albanian capital Tirana said that the first phase for the construction of Vlora airport had already started in 2018. The ambassador emphasized that 1000 jobs would be created in Albania in the first phase of the project implementation and that the official negotiations had already reached a technical level of the project.

In April 2019 it became known that the Albanian government and the Turkish investor had not reached an agreement on the minimum turnover that the Albanian state should provide. An international tender was then announced. The tendering process was canceled in spring 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic . Infrastructure Minister Belinda Balluku told Prime Minister Edi Rama that they wanted to wait for a better time.

The construction of the airfield is being opposed by environmental activists. In addition, the order was placed in 2018 without a tender.
