Aerodrome Alytus ( lit.Alytaus aerodromas ) is an airport in southern Lithuania , on the banks of the Memel and 1.5 km far from the center of the sixth largest city in Lithuania, Alytus . It is 102.5 hectares in size.

history

In 1939, the Lithuanian armed forces began building a military airfield on the site of the former Uhlan barracks . In 1940 the Soviet occupation government ended the construction work. In 1944, the space for the dislocation of France's fighter planes was used for attacks against the Axis powers (" Normandie-Nyemen ").

In the Soviet era the airport was used for civil aviation . There were flight connections to Vilnius , Kaunas , Klaipėda , Palanga and Druskininkai .

Today the airfield is used by the Alytus Aeroclub ( Miškininkų g.3 , Alytus).
