Folkbaltica

Folkbaltica ( spelling : folkBALTICA ) is a folk festival for Nordic and Baltic music cultures from the Baltic Sea countries in Schleswig-Holstein , which has been held annually since 2005. The events usually take place in April (usually the final concert is exactly four weeks after Easter Sunday) in the German-Danish border area around the central town of Flensburg .

Since 2005, folkBALTICA has initially been organized with a particular country focus or topic:

Structures

Folkbaltica was initially an event of the non-profit GmbH folkBALTICA under the umbrella of the cultural Baltic Sea network Ars Baltica . Partners were the Landesmusikrat Schleswig-Holstein e. V. , Sydslesvigsk Forening (SSF), the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Folk Schleswig-Holstein e. V. and as individuals Rainer Prüss (Flensburg), Jens-Peter Müller (Flensburg), Peter Boll (Rendsburg) and Bernd Künzer (Stein).

Until June 2012, both the management and the artistic direction were with Jens-Peter Müller. Then there was a separation: Peter Boll, Rendsburg, took over the management, while the Danish musician and composer Harald Haugaard was the artistic director for three years . and will.

At the shareholders' meeting of the gGmbH on August 27, 2014, the managing partner Peter Boll announced his resignation with immediate effect. Since no successor could be found, the dissolution of the company was initiated - and a new sponsor was necessary. It was named folkBALTICA e. V. founded. The association has only institutional members in order to guarantee greater continuity. Juliana Christiansen was the managing director of the association from April 1, 2015 to summer 2019. Afterwards Elisabeth Kose and Nele Spitzley took over the management of the festival, who had already worked for the festival before. Harald Haugaard continues to be the artistic director.

Founding members of Folk-Baltica eV are: City of Flensburg, Sønderborg Kommune, Tønder Kommune, Sydslesvigsk Forening e. V. (SSF), Bund Deutscher Nordschleswiger (BDN), Cultural Foundation of the Schleswig-Flensburg District, ROSA - Dansk Rock Samråd, LAG Folk Schleswig-Holstein e. V., Flensburger Folkverein e. V. and Speicher Husum e. V. At the head of the board is Torge Korff (head of the Flensburg cultural office).

Cooperation partners were (and are) the cultural office of the city of Flensburg, the city of Eckernförde , the municipalities of Sønderborg , Aabenraa and Tønder , the Association of German Libraries in North Schleswig (Aabenraa) as well as the organizers, churches, museums, associations and socio-cultural centers in Flensburg and the region Sønderjylland-Schleswig. The festival is supported by the Förderverein folkBALTICA e. V.

Others

For the first time in 2016, the festival has no geographical reference as a theme (with musical instruments appearing as secondary themes, such as the voice in 2014). In addition, the duration of the festival was extended at the same time (Saturday to Sunday afterwards = nine days instead of the usual five (opening Wednesday, closing Sunday)). As a further innovation (since the end of 2015), the program will be announced in December of the previous year.
