Folsom is a village in Union County in the US state of New Mexico . In 2000 the village had 75 inhabitants. The village covers an area of 1.4 km 2 and is 1948 meters above sea level.
The small village gained international fame for the archeology of North America through a nearby archaeological site. Evidence of the simultaneous existence of prehistoric bison and humans was found here for the first time in 1927 . The characteristic spearheads found here are therefore called Folsom Points and the historical period Folsom culture . The piece of evidence unearthed by Jesse Figgins , a spearhead stuck between the ribs of a bison species that became extinct 10,000 years ago, can now be admired in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science . The excavation site, which is a little west of the village, already in Colfax County , is now a National Historic Landmark .
