Fontaine de Tourny

The Fontaine de Tourny is a fountain in the Canadian city of Quebec . It is on Avenue Honoré-Mercier, on the roundabout in front of the Hôtel du Parlement du Québec (Parliament building). The fountain originally stood in the twin city of Bordeaux , was brought here as a gift for Québec's 400th anniversary and was inaugurated on July 3, 2007.

history

The fountain installed in Québec originally comes from Bordeaux, France . It is one of two identical fountains commissioned by the mayor of Bordeaux to mark the opening of the city's water supply. They each stood at one end of the Allées de Tourny designed by Louis-Urbain-Aubert de Tourny (hence the name). The model of the fountains and the sculptures are the work of the sculptor Mathurin Moreau , the execution of the sculptures and the ornaments was the responsibility of Michel Joseph Napoléon Liénard. They are in the catalog of the Barbezat art foundry in Val d'Osne , where they were made in 1854, and were awarded a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855 . There are around 15 models worldwide.

In 1857 the city of Bordeaux set up the two fountains. Due to increased maintenance costs, they were dismantled in 1960. In 2003, the Québec-based fashion chain La Maison Simons acquired one of the fountains, had it restored and made it a gift to the city of Québec for the upcoming 400th anniversary celebration. The purchase and restoration cost the company four million Canadian dollars , while the city and the National Capital Commission paid for the installation of two million dollars. The official inauguration took place on July 3, 2007. The other fountain from the Allées de Tourny is in Soulac-sur-Mer in the French department of Gironde and is in poor condition.

description

The fountain consists of several round basins, surmounted by a central well. The jets of water from the base are sprayed from the mouths of stone frogs and are directed to the next level. More jets of water arise from the higher levels and fall into the basin below.

The height of the well system is seven meters, the circumference four meters. There are a total of 43 water jets. The fountain is decorated with various figures. Above there are four children holding hands, below there are two male ( Neptune and Akis ) and two female figures ( Amphitrite and Galateia ).
