After the owner's death, the pension was donated to the Bündner Aid Association for the Deaf . Some events are also open to the hearing, and since 2006 the house has been trying harder to bridge the gap. The non-commercially oriented educational establishment, whose offer is similar to an adult education center, is the only one of its kind in Switzerland .

The cooperative is a member of the Swiss Deaf Association (SGB-FSS) and the Swiss Deaf Sports Association (SGSV-FSSS) .

The property of the guesthouse is in the immediate vicinity of Rabiosa and, despite its geographical affiliation to Passugg (and thus to Churwalden ), politically belonged to Malix . Due to the merger of Malix with Churwalden in 2009, the house is now on Churwalden territory.

A pension and its history

The Fontana guesthouse above Passugg dates back to 1897. The owner of the spa and guest house, Anton Brüesch, runs the business with his family. Like around a dozen similar guesthouses and hotels, the house is located within sight of the famous Kurhaus Passugg. The business flourished between the two world wars. After the death of Anton Brüesch, his daughter Dorly continued to run the business. The property consists of the pension building with residential building, chalet, wash house, stable and a generous 26,000 square meters of meadowland and forest. A wild forest path leads from the guest house directly to the pump room. Today, the famous Passugger mineral water is bottled below the property, only a 10-minute walk from Fontana. From there the main road leads down to Chur in 10 minutes.

Almost a hundred years after the pension was built, on February 4, 1983, Dorothea Brüesch's will is opened. With her last will, she decides that the property and all of its buildings will be handed over to the Graubünden Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Chur. None of the three associations working for the hearing impaired in the canton of Graubünden are registered under the above name. The inheritance is then awarded to the Graubünden Aid Association for the Deaf.

In 1992, buildings and land were divided up and offered for sale. There is resistance to the suggestion, which in no way takes Dorothea Brüesch's wishes into account. With success. The Fontana Passugg cooperative, founded on February 20, 1993, signs the purchase agreement on March 31. The property will be transferred to the cooperative for CHF 118,000.

Step by step

In 1897 the guesthouse was built and the Brüesch family moved in. In 1983, almost a hundred years after the guesthouse was built, Dorly Brüesch decided with her last will that the property and all of its buildings would be handed over to the Graubünden Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. In 1993 the Fontana Passugg cooperative was established. In 1995 the first groundbreaking and completion for the extension to the main building take place. In the following year, the Fontana Passugg guesthouse went into trial operation, and in 1997 it went into full operation. In 1998 the three-year pilot project “Adult Education for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired” was started. The following year, the first Fontana Festival took place with 250 visitors, and the Chur city festival was also part of the first. In 2000, extensions were built and the new playground and sports field below the educational facility was inaugurated.

In 2001 the first Fontana newspaper appeared and the three-year educational project came to an end. In the following year the second educational project was started for three years. This time the focus is on the hearing impaired and deaf. In 2004 the Alpenblick house became the property of the Fontana Passugg cooperative. This means that a second good training room is available for seminars. A repositioning took place in 2006. The board of directors decides to open the pension and the educational offer more specifically to the hearing world. In the foreground, however, remains the original purpose of offering the deaf, hard of hearing, deaf and CI wearers educational and cultural offers that are tailored to the needs of these groups.
