Fontenelle is an impact crater on the moon to the north of the lunar front on the northern edge of Mare Frigoris , south of Anaxagoras and southeast of Philolaus .

The crater rim is somewhat eroded and the crater floor shows fractures and ridge structures, features of a floor-fractured crater , which are associated with volcanic activity below the crater floor.

The crater was named by the IAU in 1935 after the French reconnaissance and astronomer Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle .
