Forefather is an English Pagan Metal - band . In contrast to other groups in this genre, which are musically more strongly influenced by Black Metal , the group itself referred to their music as "Heathen Metal" for the time being.
history
Forefather was founded in September 1997 by the brothers Wulfstan and Athelstan in Surrey. The first song, Deep into Time , was written the following October. In August 1998 the recordings for the debut album Deep Into Time began in the studio The Croft. Two months later these were already completed and song material for a second album was written. In order to release the debut album in March 1999, the own label Angelisc Enterprises was founded. In the spring of 2000, Millenium Metal Music also released the compilation Legends Untold , which contains demo recordings and alternative versions from this period. In May 2000, studio work began on the second album The Fighting Man , which was released in October of the same year. At the same time, the songwriting for a third album began again. This was recorded from September to November 2001 and published in March 2002 under the title Engla Tocyme . In August 2003 Forefather signed with the Dutch label Karmageddon Media . In October the following studio recordings began for the fourth album Ours is the Kingdom , which was released in May 2004. The re-release of the first three albums with bonus material took place in June. In December 2004 Forefather took part in the international folk metal project Folkearth , for which they wrote the song A Nordic Poem and recorded. In the published in March 2005 Burzum - tribute album they interpreted the song Beholding the Daughters of the Firmamen . The new song A Hearth Companion's Pride was recorded for the re-release of Deep Into Time as an LP on the German label Eisenwald Tonschmiede in June 2005 . In December, Forefather took part in the Falkenbach tribute album with their version of Heathenpride , although the song operated under the project name Folkearth. In June 2006 the first guitar tracks for the sixth album were created. For the Folkearth album By the Sword of my father , Forefather again contributed their own song, The Lady's Gift, in August, and Athelstan also gave the song Scaldic Art his voice. In March 2007 they took part in an anti- Geldof compilation with the exclusive song Loyalty Bound . After a few postponements, the production of the sixth album was finally realized in December 2007, which was released in February 2008 under the name Steadfast . To this end, Forefather reanimated their own label under the new name Seven Kingdoms.
style
The group claims to have been influenced by a wide variety of bands, from Burzum to Iron Maiden . The lyrical focus is not on Norse mythology or Viking sagas, as is usual in the genre, but on early Anglo-Saxon history.
