The font Formata belongs to the font class of linear sans ( sans serif ). It is influenced by the Renaissance and was designed in 1984 in the standard weights Light, Regular, Medium and Bold and their italic variants as well as an outline style by Bernd Möllenstädt for H. Berthold AG . In 1988 Möllenstädt added the condensed variants (narrower letters) to the font family , and later also an “ExtraCondensed” version of the standard weights. Möllenstädt also developed the Signata font from the forms of the formats , which has stronger contrasts between horizontal and vertical weights .

The font is currently used for headlines by the French daily Midi Libre . The Formata was in the print media , the typeface of the Allianz Group . The font was also used by Neckermann Reisen , Postbank , Infratest and Škoda as their corporate font . The Lega Nord party used the font on its posters for the top candidate Umberto Bossi during the 2008 election in Italy . The font landed in 46th place in the FontShop's selection of the 100 best fonts .

Classification of the script

  • According to DIN 16518 , the formats are categorized in group VIa (sans serif linear antiquities with a classical character) .
  • Hans Peter Willberg classifies them as static grotesques in his classification matrix .
