Fornelo is a place and a former municipality in northwest Portugal .

history

Finds prove a settlement back to the Copper Age . Other finds date from the time of the Roman occupation , in particular numerous roof tiles.

The oldest mention of today's place comes from a deed of donation to the monastery of Vairão in 974.

Fornelos had been an independent community since 1586 at the latest. It was part of the Maia County until 1836. Since then Fornelo has been part of the Vila do Conde County.

With the municipal reform in 2013 , the independent municipality Fornelo was dissolved and merged with Vairão to form the new municipality Fornelo e Vairão .

Fornelo was the seat of an independent municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Vila do Conde in the district of Porto . It had an area of ​​6.3 km² and 1390 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

As part of the regional reform on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Fornelo and Vairão were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Fornelo e Vairão . Fornelo is the seat of this newly formed municipality.
