Vairão is a place and a former municipality in northwestern Portugal .

history

The place originated as São Salvador de Vairão in connection with the local monastery from the 10th century. The monastery Mosteiro de Vairão was officially documented for the first time in a document from the year 974. In the 12th century the monastery was taken over by Benedictine nuns and existed until 1891.

Until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1820 and the following Miguelistenkrieg (1832-1834) Vairão was a municipality in Maia district . Since 1836 it has been a parish of the Vila do Conde County.

With the municipality reform in 2013 , the independent municipality Vairão was dissolved and merged with Fornelo to form the new municipality Fornelo e Vairão .

Vairão was the seat of an independent municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Vila do Conde in the district of Porto . It had an area of ​​4.6 km² and 1251 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

As part of the regional reform on September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Vairão and Fornelo were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Fornelo e Vairão . Fornelo became the seat of this newly formed municipality, the previous municipal administration in Vairão continued to exist as a citizens' office.
