The Kranichstein Forestry Office is a building in Messel .
History and description
The Kranichstein Forestry Office was built under Landgrave Ernst Ludwig at the beginning of the 18th century in what was then the Darmstadt Forest. In the 18th century the property was the seat of the chief forester of the Arheilger Forest. In 1785 the formerly single-storey building was converted into a two-storey house with a mansard roof . It is the only surviving forester's house in the Darmstadt Forest of this conversion stage. Under the wooden shingling installed in 1899 there is probably half-timbering . An older barn made of stone masonry forms the end of the courtyard. The house was used as a chief forester until the end of 1975.
Monument protection
For architectural and city history reasons, the building is a cultural monument .
