Fort Macleod is a small town in the southwest of the Canadian province of Alberta . It is on the Oldman River , 170 kilometers south of Calgary and 50 kilometers west of Lethbridge . The settlement is named after the former Lieutenant-Colonel and Commissioner James Farquharson Macleod of the North West Mounted Police .
history
The place was founded in 1884 when a barrack camp of the North West Mounted Police, which had existed since 1874, was relocated here. The camp was built on an island in the Oldman River and turned into a fort. It was the first North West Mounted Police outpost in western Canada.
Already on 31 December 1892, when the name of the settlement still Macleod was the settlement was given the status of a town ( Town ) awarded.
In 1897 the place was connected to the railway network and grew very quickly until 1912. The city then stagnated and the function of a regional center was taken over by the neighboring Lethbridge. Many buildings remained unchanged for many decades, so that in the 1980s Fort Macleod was named Alberta's first Provincial Historic Area .
