biography

As a photographer, Maraini was mainly known for his activities in Tibet and Japan . His recordings of the Ainu people in Hokkaidō are considered historical documentation of an ancient culture. In 2002 he received recognition from the Photographic Society of Japan for his artistic recordings. The latter also recognized Maraini's years of efforts to promote relations between Japan and Italy. Maraini also took pictures in the Karakoram , Hindu Kush , Southeast Asia and southern Italy . As an anthropologist and ethnologist, he was particularly famous for his two trips with the Tibetologist Giuseppe Tucci in 1937 and 1948. As a mountaineer, he is known for his expeditions in the Himalayas.

He spent the Second World War in Japan, where he was interned in a camp in Nagoya-Tempaku (名古屋 市 天 白区) from September 1943 after Badoglio's betrayal , as one of the few "unreliable" Italian civilians . In protest against the poor supply situation, he hacked off the little finger of his left hand and threw it to his guards.

The writer Dacia Maraini is his daughter.
