description
Fourmerkland Tower is isolated around eight kilometers northwest of Dumfries. A coat of arms above the main portal shows the year of construction 1590 and shows the clan coat of arms of the Maxwells . However, the foundations are of an older date, so that a previous structure at the same location appears likely. Fourmerkland Tower was renovated during the 19th century.
The elongated structure has a footprint of 7.2 mx 5.8 m. The masonry of the defense tower consists of quarry stone , with building openings with profiled bezels made of red sandstone . The entrance portal is on the left on the south side. In addition to small lattice windows , various slit windows are embedded in the facades. Two corner tourelles with slate-covered conical roofs protrude , which were probably rebuilt in the 19th century. The final gable roof is made with stepped gables and has gable roof dormers . The ground floor room is worked with stone vaults . A spiral staircase leads to the upper floors.
