The Fourth United States Army ( German  4th US Army ) was a large army unit of the United States Army , which existed from 1922 to 1971.

history

The 4th US Army was set up in New York in 1922 as an association of the United States Army Reserve . On August 9, 1932, she was withdrawn from the reserve and assigned to the regular army as one of four active armies. The headquarters were from the summer of 1932 in Omaha , Nebraska and from June 1936 in the Presidio of San Francisco . Under the "Joint Action" plan of 1935, the army was given responsibility for the defense of the Pacific coast. In March 1941, the Western Defense Command was established in the area of responsibility of the army , to which it was subordinated. After the USA entered the war in December 1941, it became the Western Theater of Operations . From March to November 1942, the army was involved in the forced relocation of approximately 110,000 Japanese Americans from the west coast to rear areas.

On January 7, 1944, the headquarters of the army was moved to Fort Sam Houston , Texas, in order to take over the duties of the 3rd US Army, which was intended for use in Europe . The 4th Army was involved in the formation of the combat troops from which the 9th and 15th US Armies were formed.

After the war ended, the Army was responsible for recruiting and training in the southwestern United States. In July 1971 it was united with the 5th US Army in Fort Sam Houston and thus dissolved.
