The Sixth United States Army ( German 6th US Army ) is an army of the United States Army , which currently serves as the Land Component Command of the United States Southern Command ( United States Army South , USARSO for short ). It was used in the Pacific theater of war during World War II .
history
The army was formed in January 1943 under the command of Lieutenant General Walter Krueger , and from April onwards it bore the code name Alamo Force . It was first used during Operation Cartwheel to isolate the Japanese Rabaul base in New Britain . After completing the operation, she carried out missions on the north coast of New Guinea together with the Australian Army .
In September 1944 she was replaced by the 8th US Army in New Guinea and took part in the landing and Battle of Leyte in mid-October . The 6th Army landed on October 20, 1944 at different stretches of beach on the east coast of Leyte . The invasion was covered by the US 7th Fleet under Vice Admiral Kinkaid with approximately 700 ships, including 157 warships. The X. Corps under Major General Sibert landed in the northern sector, the XXIV Corps under Major General Hodges on a stretch of beach about 25 km to the south. The X. Corps ( 1st Cavalry Division and 24th Infantry Division ) was able to take Tacloban and its airfields by October 21 and secure the road between Leyte and Samar. The XXIV Corps ( 7th and 96th and later 32nd and 77th Infantry Divisions ) had to bring the southern area of the Leyte Valley under control. The Japanese forces were concentrated in the vicinity of Baybay for defense in order to stop the enemy ascent to the western coast of the Ormoc Valley.
In December 1944 the 6th Army was replaced by the 8th Army and prepared to land on Luzon . On January 9, 1945, she landed in the Gulf of Lingayen and secured the northern part of Luzon after meeting the 8th Army near Manila . The 6th Army was scheduled to land on Kyūshū when Operation Downfall was not carried out .
After briefly participating in the occupation of Japan , the 6th Army was relocated back to the United States and took up its new headquarters in the Presidio of San Francisco . She was then responsible for training army units in part of the continental US until it was disbanded in 1995.
In 2008 it was reactivated as United States Army South (Sixth Army) with headquarters in Fort Sam Houston , Texas.
