Louis Tromelin

Louis-François-Marie-de Nicolas Le Goarant Tromelin (born January 11, 1786 in Gourin , today's Morbihan department ; † 1867 ) was a captain of the French navy , who became known through political and military missions in the Pacific Ocean and as the discoverer of some islands applies.

Life

Tromelin joined the Navy in 1800 and served on various ships during the Napoleonic Wars . In 1826 he was given command of the corvette Bayonnaise and from December 21 of that year he sailed from Toulon via the islands of Hawaii to South America. On the way he visited other Pacific islands and returned to Toulon on March 19, 1829. During this trip he is said to have discovered the Phoenix Island Rawaki and possibly also the Caroline Island Fais , with John Palmer, captain of the Phoenix , for the former, and Francisco de Castro in the 16th century for the latter . He is also credited with exploring Vanikoro .
