Fowlerichthys is a genus of fish from the frogfish family(Antennariidae). The genus was described by Barbour in 1941and named in honor of the American zoologist Henry Weed Fowler , but was synonymous with Antennarius by Monod & Le Danois in1973. WhenRachel J. Arnold and the armfinch expert Theodore W. Pietsch revised the frogfish, the genus became valid again and the species were assigned to the former Antennarius ocellatus group Fowlerichthys .

features

All Fowlerichthys species have the short, laterally flattened body typical of all frogfish and are relatively large with lengths of 28 to 38 cm. Only Fowlerichthys radiosus remains much smaller, less than 8 cm in length. Fowlerichthys TYPES have five branched belly fin rays and vertebrae 20, while all other frogfish species only a branched and four simple fin rays have and all other frogfish species of the subfamily Antennariinae have 19 vertebrae. Known exceptions are only a single specimen of Antennarius striatus , which had 18 vertebrae and a single specimen of Antennarius commerson with 20 vertebrae.

Another characteristic of the genus is a special stage in its early youth called the "Scutatus" prejuvenile form. This postlarval stage is characterized by a shield-like, paired outgrowth of the fish skull that extends over the gill cover , as well as an expansion of the front edges of the jockstrap . This "Scutatus" stage is so peculiar that it was originally described as a new genus and species ( Kanazawaichthys scutatus ).

Systematics

Within the frogfish, Fowlerichthys belongs to the subfamily Antennariinae and is there in a sister group relationship to the three other genera ( Antennarius , Antennatus & Histrio ), so it is the basic genus of the subfamily.
