The Antennariinae are a subfamily of the frogfish (Antennariidae). The subfamily was at in 2011 Revision of anglers fish by Rachel J. Arnold and Armflosserexperten Theodore W. Pietsch described . Along with its sister group , the subfamily Histiophryninae , it is one of the two main frogfish clades.

While the latter has a limited range that extends in the Indo-Pacific from Taiwan to Tasmania , the Antennariinae occur worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas.

features

All species of the Antennariinae have the short, laterally flattened body typical of all frogfish. The Antennariinae differ from the Histiophryninae in the presence of the mesopterygoid, a bone between the pterygoid (wing bone) and metapterygoid, which is also part of the orbit , and the epurale, an elongated, free-standing bone in the caudal fin skeleton, behind the last neural arch of the spine.

Another characteristic of the subfamily is the lack of brood care behavior , while the Histiophryninae practice various forms of brood care. The Antennariinae are free-spawners and pelagic larvae hatch from the eggs .

Phylogeny

Within the frogfish, the Antennariinae form the sister group of the subfamily Histiophryninae . The Antennariinae themselves can in turn be divided into two main clades, the basal genus Fowlerichthys and a clade, which is formed by three other genera (the genus Nudiantennarius is not considered here).
