Together with Commerson's frogfish , wart frogfish , polyspotted frogfish and leopard frogfish, it forms a group of closely related species.

features

The painted frogfish is yellow, red, green, gray or black in color. In black specimens, the fins have blue-gray edges, the tips of the pectoral and pelvic fins are white. The tang (Illicium) is twice as long as the second ray of the dorsal fin. Young painted frogfish imitate poisonous nudibranch snails with their drawing .

distribution

The fish live in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific , from East and South Africa to Japan , Lord Howe Island and Hawaii . They stay in shallow water, at depths of one to fifty meters, on the sandy bottom of lagoons between coral reefs . Painted frogfish can usually be found near sponges , less often with corals or algae clusters.
