The freckle frogfish ( Antennatus coccineus ) lives in coastal waters with a tropical climate in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific, from the coast of East Africa to the coast of Panama , Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands .

features

Freckle frogfish grow to be about eight inches long. Their color varies, is usually yellow, red or light gray, often with a weakly pigmented dark point on the back, at the rear base of the dorsal fin.

The “Illicium” (angel) formed from the first ray of the dorsal fin is exactly as long as the second dorsal fin ray. The "Esca" (bait) is spherical and white or consists of a tuft of filaments. The last ray of the pelvic fins is forked. A tail stalk is missing. The dorsal and anal fin end directly at the base of the caudal fin. They have five dark transverse bars on their caudal fin.

Way of life

The fish lives hidden in tide pools, lagoons and outer reefs between rocks and sponges , especially in very shallow water, above ten meters, less often at depths of up to 75 meters. Their diet consists mainly of small fish. They lay their spawn in a ribbon-like, gelatinous mass.
