The Troisdorf Tunnel (also Troisdorf Tunnel ) is a 627 m ( route kilometers 20.1 to 20.8) long railway tunnel on the high-speed line Cologne – Rhine / Main . It runs in the area of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Troisdorf and therefore bears her name. It is used to cross under several track connections without any height and is one of the shortest tunnels on the high-speed line.

The costs, including the adjacent ramps, were estimated at around 40 million DM (around 20 million euros ).

course

In the tunnel, the high - speed route passes under several crossings between the right Rhine route and the Sieg route .

The structure accommodates two tracks that are planned to be driven on at 200 km / h. The route runs straight in the tunnel, the gradient slopes down towards the middle on both sides.

Trough structures of 300 and 260 m in length are connected on both sides . In the middle of the tube an emergency exit leads to the surface.

history

planning

The tunnel was not planned in the planning status at the end of 1995. At the end of 1997, however, the tube was planned to be 627 m long. This corresponds to the length actually realized later.

According to a media report, the planning order for a tunnel under the existing track system was given at the end of 1998.

construction

At the beginning of 2000 the preparatory measures took place. Construction work began in October 2000. The structure was built using the top-down method . The usual sequence of steps in tunnel construction was reversed: First, 34,000 square meters of sheet piling was driven into the sandy soil, then the tunnel ceiling was concreted and finally excavation began.

At the beginning of 2001, most of the sheet piling was set and 36 blocks of the tunnel ceiling were concreted. Preparatory work was in progress on the adjoining trough structures.

Rail operations in this area, with around 400 passenger and freight trains per day, had to be maintained during the construction period. Extensive changes to the tracks of the Troisdorf train station were necessary. The previous central platform 3 was removed to gain space for the high-speed tracks, and a new platform for trains to and from the right-hand Rhine line and a new platform for the Sieg line were built. The former house platform was taken out of service.

The breakthrough was celebrated in mid-May 2001. By then, 135,000 m³ of sand had been excavated and 33,000 cubic meters of concrete, 4,000 tons of steel and 14 kilometers of anchors had been installed.

Work on the track system in the tunnel began at the end of 2001. At the beginning of 2002 the installation of the overhead line in the tunnel began.
