The Elzer Berg Tunnel is a 1110 m long railway tunnel on the high-speed line Cologne – Rhine / Main . It is located on Elzer Berg , in the area of the Central Hessian municipality of Elz, and therefore bears his name.
The tube accommodates two tracks on a slab track , which can be driven on as planned at 300 km / h.

In the direction of Frankfurt, the north portal is located near the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse , on Hessian territory.
In a southerly direction the route runs in a right curve. The tube crosses under the federal motorway 3 in a south-westerly direction over a length of around 400 m. When going under part of the Elzer Forest , the biotope of the same name is also undercut. A water protection area with the Gückingen drinking water extraction system is also crossed under .
The gradient slopes down to the south portal with a gradient of up to 40 per mille.
After each section of the open road, the Lange Issel tunnel follows to the west and the Limburg tunnel to the south-east .
In the northern section of the tunnel, an emergency exit leads from the driving tunnel to the surface.

planning
At the end of 1994, the structure was planned to be 1,100 m long, with a maximum overburden of 30 m. According to these plans, the structure was to be built entirely using the mining method.
At the end of 1995, the planned length of the structure was 1110 m. At this point in time, the regional planning procedure in this section had been completed.
construction
The tunnel was built with a mining method over a length of 840 m; Due to the unfavorable soil conditions, an elm tunnel was sometimes used. An open construction method was used over a length of 270 m. Due to the presence of groundwater - the tunnel route passes the Kelterbaum spring at a distance of around 100 m - the tunnel was made pressure-tight.

A rescue exercise with 120 “passengers” and 450 rescue workers took place in the tunnel in November 2013.
