The fox weaver , also called fox weaver or Uganda weaver , ( Ploceus spekeoides ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of bunting weavers ( Ploceus ).
The Latin additional species refers to the fact that this species is similar to the Somali weaver ( Ploceus spekei ) ( ancient Greek οιδης oidēs , German 'similar' ).
The bird is endemic to Uganda .
The distribution area includes moist savannah , tropical or subtropical, seasonally wet or flooded, bush and tree-covered grassland in swamp areas , often with papyrus .
features
The species is 14 cm tall. It has a strong beak, a dark iris and a short tail. The male has a golden yellow neck, crown and forehead, a reddish iris and a black mask that tapers to a point in the chest. The back is black, the wing covers brown with narrow yellow wing edges. The rump is yellow, the tail light brown. The Somali weaver is very similar but has one pale eye. The female is pale in color with a yellow rump and a yellow underside, each with strong dark stripes on the apex and back.
The species is monotypical .

The breeding season is between May and August. Fox weavers breed in colonies .
