Frédéric Abbès

Frédéric Abbès is a French prehistoric scientist who dealt with the Neolithic of the northern Levant and the history of the eastern Mediterranean between the 10th and 6th millennium BC. Busy. He led excavations at important archaeological sites, such as under Danielle Stordeur at Tell Aswad and in 2010 in El Kowm in central Syria.

Abbès deals on the one hand with the transition from the hunter-gatherer to local, but also semi-nomadic farmer-pastoral society, in particular the contributions of stone processing technology and the spread of the Neolithic into the drier areas during the Pre-Ceramic Neolithic A (PPNA) and the B. . On the other hand, his focus is on questions of the circulation of raw materials and food, goods and ideas during the Neolithic. He is currently working at the Laboratoire Archéorient - Environnements et sociétés de l'Orient ancien in Lyon , more precisely at the Center national de la recherche scientifique at the Université Lumière Lyon 2 . This interdisciplinary institution was headed by Pierre Lombard from 2003 to 2010 , then by Emmanuelle Vila until 2015 , and Christophe Benech has been the director since January 2016 .

Abbès led the excavations of Qdeir 1 in Syria, where he also took over the archaeological supervision, security and various excavations in central Syria, such as in the Palmyra region or in the Bal'as Mountains. This mountain range rises about 44 km east of Salamiyya , extends 25 km from north to south and 15 km from west to east, whereby it is up to 1100 m high. In 2008, 14 Khiamien sites were discovered there within a radius of just four kilometers from Wadi Tumbaq 1. Abbès previously worked as an assistant under the direction of Danielle Stordeur on the Neolithic settlement hill Tell Aswad . He also directed excavations in Armenia .
