François Clouet (* 1510 in Tours , † September 22, 1572 in Paris ; also François Janet ) was a French painter .

Life

Clouet's father, the Dutch painter Jean Clouet , settled in Tours and later in Paris. Jean Clouet was named after his first name Janet (actually Jehannet). "Janet" was therefore also used as a surname for his son, which led to confusion.

Francois Clouet received French citizenship in 1541 and was court painter to Franz I , Heinrich II and Charles IX.

style

Clouet's paintings clearly bear the trace of his Dutch ancestry; they are very finely executed, with a predominantly silver-gray tone, which makes the modeling of the flesh appear somewhat flat. He cannot compete with Holbein , to whom his pictures are often ascribed. Clouet is one of the painters of the Second School of Fontainebleau .

Works

One of his main works is the life-size, full-length portrait of Charles IX. in the Vienna Belvedere . The Louvre in Paris has the portraits of Charles IX. and Elisabeths of Austria . A collection of 88 portraits of members of the French court drawn in black and red chalk is in Howard Castle.

The work Lady in the Bath has been identified as the portrayal of Diane de Poitiers , but it is more likely to resemble Marie Touchet, Charles IX's mistress . Several drawings, mostly in the Musée Condé, are also attributed to him.

Some of his works were in the following galleries in 1889 (note: the current whereabouts may differ):

Louvre, Paris

  • Francis I of France (1540)
  • Elisabeth of Austria, Queen of France (1571)
  • Pierre Quthe (1562)
  • Claude de Beaune
  • Francis of Lorraine
  • Francois Hercule de France
  • Louis de Saint-Gelais
  • Pierre Forget
