François Ignace Schaal
François Ignace Schaal (born December 5, 1747 in Sélestat (today in the Bas-Rhin department ), † August 8, 1833 ibid) was a French general of the Revolution and the Premier Empire .
On March 3, 1793 he was provisionally appointed Général de brigade and on June 13, 1795 as a division general.
During the French Revolution he was one of the commanders of the republican army , where he stood out in particular during the siege of Mainz and, as Kleber's successor, demanded that the city be handed over from FML von Neu . From February 14th to April 29th, 1795 he was involved in the siege of Mainz as commander of the republican army on the Rhine .
As a loyal Napoleon Bonaparte, he followed his military engagement within the army of the First Empire. Like many other officers who served the emperor, his name is entered on the fourteenth column of the triumphal arch in Paris, which is on the avenue des Champs-Élysées .
Francois Ignace Schaal was later also involved in politics and between 1800 and 1807 was mayor of Sélestat (Schlestadt / Schlettstatt).
