François Lissarrague

François Lissarrague (born August 5, 1947 in Saint-Mandé ) is a French classical archaeologist .

Life

He taught as a professor of classical studies (1972–1980), was an administrative assistant (Ingénieurs, techniciens et personnels administratifs [ITA 1b]) at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) (1980–1987), Chargé de recherche de 1ère classe at the CNRS (1987–1995), Directeur de recherche de 2ème classe at the CNRS (1995), Directeur d'études at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (from 1996, retired since 2016). In 2014, François Lissarrague Sather was Professor of Classical Literature at the University of California at Berkeley .

He is one of the world's foremost scholars of ancient Greek iconography. His main interest is the interpretation of Attic images: symposium, sport, warriors, heroes and gods. He also deals with questions of gender and is interested in sociological and structuralist approaches of antiquity.
