François Marie Guyonneau de Pambour

François Marie Guyonneau de Pambour ( FM Guyonneau, Comte de Grandmaison de Pambour ; * 1795 in Noyon , † February 19, 1878 in Tours ) was a French officer and engineer.

Life

Guyonneau de Pambour attended the École Polytechnique from 1813 to 1815, then entered the artillery and in 1826 moved to the General Staff. In 1828 he retired as captain and lived as a private citizen and engineer in Paris.

After the work of Nicholas Wood and Thomas Tredgold from 1825 , Guyonneau de Pambour published the first extensive and important work on the theory and practice of steam locomotives in 1835. While Jean-Victor Poncelet and his protégé Arthur Morin had assumed a constant coefficient of friction in their work, Guyonneau de Pambour introduced a coefficient that varied with the operating conditions, which led to a dispute with the other two. Perhaps that was why his candidacy for the Academy of Sciences was unsuccessful in 1837, 1840 and 1843.

He had also found that when applying Boyle's law , the two competitors had failed to take into account the drop in steam temperature during expansion. Émile Clapeyron used Pambour's formula in his lectures in 1851, but also recognized the shortcomings in his assumption that the steam was dry. This thesis was later improved with the Clausius-Rankine cycle .
