François Villeroy de Galhau (born February 24, 1959 in Strasbourg ) is a French bank manager and Haut fonctionnaire . Born in Alsace with Saarland roots, he has been Governor of the Banque de France since November 1, 2015 .

François Villeroy de Galhau is the son of Claude Villeroy de Galhau (* December 18, 1931 - June 13, 2017) and Odile de la Lande de Calan (* August 19, 1940) from Wallerfangen ( French Vaudrevange ) on the French border in Saarland . He comes from the Lorraine - Saarland industrial family Villeroy de Galhau, who are co-owners of Villeroy & Boch and have been based in Saarland since 1791. He speaks good German. After graduating from the Catholic Lycée Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague in Paris, he began studying engineering at the École polytechnique in 1978 . He then studied at the elite ENA university until 1984 and then worked for the French Inspection générale des Finances (IGF).

From 1990 to 1993 he was European policy advisor to the Finance Minister and then to the Prime Minister Pierre Bérégovoy of France; he took on various responsibilities in the Direction du Trésor in Bercy and then in Brussels as Conseiller financier (financial advisor) in the permanent representation of France to the European Communities .

In the government of Lionel Jospin , he was from 1997 to 1999 Directeur de cabinet of Dominique Strauss-Kahn from 1999 to 2000 by Christian Sautter as Minister of Economy and Finance and from February 2000 to August 26, 2003 Head of the Direction Générale des Impôts (DGI ).

In 2003 he became General Manager of Cetelem , a consumer credit company belonging to the BNP Paribas group ; from December 2011 to April 2015, he was General Director for Domestic Markets at BNP Paribas.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls appointed him on May 1, 2015 to head an investment financing commission. He has been Governor of the Banque de France since November 1, 2015 . In this capacity he supports the course of the President of the ECB , Mario Draghi, by buying government bonds on a large scale to achieve an inflation of the euro of almost 2%.

Participation in public discourse

As of August 2019, he is a member of the board of directors of Semaines sociales de France (SSF), a social initiative. Also active there, for example, are Michel Camdessus (SSF president since 2001), Jean Boissonnat (SSF president from 1994 to 2000) from the financial industry and other sectors that and other personalities with the Catholic social teaching focus.

Since 2003 he has been expressing himself frequently in public (e.g. in press articles, on radio or television), in his professional context or as a private person, on various topics. For example, he spoke about Europe, Franco-German relations , his vision of management or economic reforms. He also spoke on questions of business ethics, especially those in the financial sector. In his book L'espérance d'un Européen (“The Hope of a European”), published in 2014, he wrote, among other things, on social issues in Europe and suggested that the European Union should promote the employment of youth and young adults financially. He referred to the Erasmus program .

Others

In 2015 he was a member of the supervisory board of Villeroy & Boch AG until his appointment at Banque de France. He was a member of the supervisory board of the media group Groupe Bayard .
