François al-Hajj

François al-Hajj (also spelled al-Hajj; born June 28, 1953 in Rmeish ; † December 12, 2007 in Baabda ) was a Lebanese brigadier general .

Al-Hajj was in the southern Lebanese village of Rmeish (District Bint Jbeil in the province Nabataea born). In 1972 he entered the Military Academy , which he graduated in 1975. He had a career as a professional soldier and was promoted to brigadier general in 2002. As a Maronite Christian, he was under discussion as a potential candidate for the post of Lebanese army commander , which is constitutionally only allowed to be a Maronite, which is currently still held by Michel Sulaiman , who as a presidential candidate-designate may retire from military service. Al-Hajj was instrumental in the victory of the Lebanese army in the fight against the Islamist organization Fatah al-Islam , which took place from May 20 to September 2, 2007 in and around the Palestinian refugee camp Nahr al-Bared . On December 12, 2007, al-Hajj was killed in a bomb attack in his vehicle in Baabda in Mount Lebanon Governorate near Beirut .
