François de Callières

François de Callières (born May 14, 1645 in Cherbourg , † March 4, 1717 in Paris ) was a French diplomat, writer and member of the Académie française .

life and work

François de Callières was the son of the marshal and writer Jacques de Callières († 1662) and the brother of the governor of New France , Louis-Hector de Callières (1648-1703). As cabinet secretary and secret diplomat to the king, he was admitted to the Académie française (seat no. 29) in 1689. He died in Paris at the age of 71.

Publications

According to gallant prose, he published works of literature and language observation in the years 1688 to 1693, first a presentation of the Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes , then an analysis of bon motes and "bons contes" (witty stories with punch lines) in antiquity and Present with instructions on how to write satirical texts. He had great success with his critical observations on the linguistic use of the time, two books with the titles Des mots à la mode (Fashionable language use) and Du bon et du mauvais usage (On the good and the bad use of language), which address the need for linguistic ethics and standardization met.

Shortly before his death, he published a handbook of diplomacy , which became a classic, translated several times and edited to the present day.
