Françoise Cachin (born May 8, 1936 - February 5, 2011 ) was a French art historian .

Life

Françoise Cachin was born in 1936 to the doctor Charles Cachin and his wife Ginette (1913–1980), née Signac. Her grandfathers were the communist politician Marcel Cachin and the pointillist painter Paul Signac .

She studied art history with André Chastel at the Institut d'Art et d'Archéologie (Institute for Art and Archeology) at the University of Paris . Since 1967 she has been a curator at the Musées de France (Association of French National Museums). From 1969 to 1978 she worked as a curator at the Musée National d'Art Moderne ; first in the Palais de Tokyo and later in the newly opened Center Georges Pompidou . In 1978 she moved to the planning staff of the new Musée d'Orsay , of which she became founding director in 1986. Here she was significantly involved in the organization of exhibitions on Édouard Manet , Paul Gauguin , Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat . She stayed at the Musée d'Orsay until 1994, when the French Minister of Culture Jacques Toubon appointed her director of the Musées de France. In this position she was subordinate to 34 national art museums, including the Louvre , the Musée d'Orsay and the Palace of Versailles . In 2001 she retired and was appointed directeur honoraire des Musées de France .
