Another focus of Sans i Cabot's work was history painting . His best known of these was his allegory "Freedom and Independence" in 1862 , an episode from the Battle of Trafalgar . His oil paintingGeneral Prim and the Catalan volunteers near Tetuan ”, an incident from the Spanish-Moroccan war, was highly praised and with a political message .

Another picture, which is also a political statement, deals with Churruca's death in the Battle of Trafalgar. The Teatro Real (royal theater) in Madrid decorated Sans i Cabot with some ceiling paintings, as did the Teatro de la Zarzuela and the Teatro Nuevo Apolo a short time later . For some private residences, including four historic ones in the Alcazar of Toledo , he created frescoes in addition to ceiling paintings .

The high point of his artistic life was his appointment as director of the Museo del Prado in 1873 . From 1875 he also worked as a museologist at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where he died in his house in 1881.
