Francesco Antommarchi (born July 5, 1780 in Corsica , † April 3, 1838 in Santiago de Cuba , Cuba ) was Napoleon Bonaparte's doctor on St. Helena .

Life

Antommarchi studied at the Pisa Medical School and in 1812 became a prosector at the Hospital Santa Maria in Florence . At the request of Cardinal Joseph Fesch , Antommarchi was entrusted with the medical care of Napoleon Bonaparte in his exile on St. Helena in 1818. Napoleon's rejection of Antommarchis soon gave way to familiarity, which then led to a donation of 100,000 francs .

On May 7, 1821, Antommarchi took a plaster cast of Napoleon's face. Later bronze casts were made from this death mask , some of them signed by Antommarchi. After the emperor's death, Antommarchi declared that he had not died of stomach cancer but of a fever that was prevalent on the island and refused to sign the autopsy protocol. Antommarchi then returned to Italy via England. There, Archduchess (and former Spanish Queen) Maria Luise von Bourbon-Parma refused to support him. For some time Antommarchi settled in Paris , where he was able to publish his work Mémoires ou les derniers moments de Napoléon in 1823 .

Politically interested, Antommarchi went to Poland and took over the management of the medical institutions there during the November uprising in Warsaw in 1830 , but soon returned to Paris. At the end of 1831 Antommarchi wanted to regain a foothold in his native country, but failed because, according to his own admission, "... nothing more resembled his Italy". He later went to the West Indies and died there on April 3, 1838, at the age of about 58 in Santiago de Cuba. He found his final resting place in the local cemetery, where a memorial was erected for his charity.
