Francesco Carelli (born October 8, 1758 in Conversano , † September 17, 1832 in Naples ) was an administrative officer of the Kingdom of Naples and an important numismatist, coin collector and archaeologist.

Carelli, who was interested in antiquity, especially ancient coins, at an early age, initially worked as a lawyer and then entered the administrative service of the Bourbon kings of Naples, temporarily on the island of Sicily .

From 1802 to 1805 he headed an embassy to France, which in 1803 brought to Malmaison Napoleon and his wife Joséphine a significant amount of ancient finds from Pompeii as "gifts" (actually more of a tribute negotiated in the Peace of Florence ), these are still today to visit there. Carelli then worked in the Ministry of the Interior of the Kingdom of Naples and was responsible for education and public buildings, among other things.

Carelli was a member of a commission that dealt with the excavations in Pompeii and Herculaneum . In 1817 he became permanent secretary of the Accademia Ercolana . However, he was particularly fond of numismatics, and he himself owned a significant collection of ancient Greek coins. In an extensive work he compiled all of the ancient coins of Italy known to him. The tablets made for this could only appear after his death.
