Francesco Gabrieli
Francesco Gabrieli (born April 27, 1904 in Rome , Italy ; † December 13, 1996 there ) was an Italian Arabist and Orientalist .
Life
Francesco Gabrieli was born on the top floor of the Roman Palazzo Corsini , the seat of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei , in the official apartment of his father, who was a librarian at the Accademia. He learned the Arabic language from his father and then went to La Sapienza University in Rome, where he studied with the orientalist Carlo Alfonso Nallino . At the same time he learned both the Persian and Turkish languages , besides he also spoke perfect French , German , English and Russian .
After Gabrieli first turned to the Middle Ages as a field of study, he dealt with the poets of the early Islamic period. Other work included, for example, the military leader Maslama Ibn ʾAbd al-Malik under the Umayyad ruler Hisham Ibn ʾAbd al-Malik or the two brothers, the Abbassid caliphs al-Amin and al-Ma'mun . His translations of the Arabic sources from the time of the Crusades opened up new insights into the history of this time.
Gabrieli was a professor at the University of Palermo , at the University of Naples L'Orientale and then until his retirement at the La Sapienza University in Rome. He worked on the Enciclopedia Italiana , or Treccani for short , with and was responsible for the second edition of The Encyclopedia of Islam. New Edition , which was published in Leiden and Paris. Gabrieli was also a member and temporarily president of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei .
