Francesco Cantelli
Francesco Paolo Cantelli (born December 20, 1875 in Palermo , † July 21, 1966 in Rome ) was an Italian mathematician . He is best known for the Borel-Cantelli lemma from probability theory . Like Valeri Ivanovich Gliwenko , he also developed the Gliwenko-Cantelli theorem and proved a version of the strong law of large numbers (see Cantelli's theorem ).
Cantelli studied mathematics in Palermo and wrote his thesis in 1899 on perturbation theory of planets in celestial mechanics . He was a mathematics teacher in high schools and also employed at the observatory in Palermo. There he dealt with the statistical analysis of data and turned to the calculation of probability . In 1903 he became an actuary at the Istituti di Previdenza and later the founder of the Italian actuarial association Istituto Italiano degli Attuari , as well as the editor of the important actuarial journal Giornale dell'Istituto Italiano degli Attuari . In 1923 he went back to the university as a professor of actuarial mathematics with the stations Catania, Naples (from 1925) and Rome (from 1931). He remained a professor in Rome until his retirement in 1951.
