Francesco Podesti
Francesco Podesti (born March 21, 1800 in Ancona , † February 10, 1895 in Rome ) was an Italian painter.
Life
In 1815 Podesti went to Rome to study at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca , first with Gaspare Landi and then with Vincenzo Camuccini , for whom he also worked as a studio assistant. His first own work was strongly influenced by the latter.
In 1836 Karl Albert , the King of Sardinia, commissioned him with the painting “The Judgment of Solomon” for his Palazzo Reale in Turin. Podesti turned down an offer to lead the Accademia Albertina in Turin.
Between 1856 and 1865 adorned Podesti the Sala dell'Immacolate the Vatican frescoes on the occasion of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Pius IX .
The critic Pietro Selvatico (1803-1880) compared Podesti's works with those of Raphael .
The municipal art gallery in Ancona now bears the name of Francesco Podesti.
