Francesco Saverio Quadrio (born December 1, 1695 in Ponte in Valtellina , † November 21, 1756 in Milan ) was an Italian priest, historian and writer.

biography

At the age of 15 he entered the Jesuit order. After completing his studies in Bologna , he had the opportunity to meet Cardinal Prospero Lambertini, the future Pope Benedict XIV . He taught in several Italian cities. In 1741 Benedict XIV gave him the opportunity to leave the Jesuits to travel freely as a secular priest. He later moved to Paris . In Milan he was accepted at the Accademia dei Trasformati.

As a polygraph he wrote verse , works of science , history and literary criticism . His first piece is " Il cavaliere errante ", a heroic-comic poem unknown to us because it was created in his youth and destroyed shortly afterwards. Years later he created "Il mondo lunare scoperto" , but his most famous work is "Della storia e della ragione di ogni poesia" (On the story and the reason of every poem) the first part of which was published in 1734 under a pseudonym. The work, which devoured more than ten years of work, is considered to be one of the first attempts at a history of Italian literature . He is also remembered for a work on the Valtellina .
