Francesco Sette

Francesco Sette (born August 8, 1957 in Rome ) is an Italian solid-state physicist and General Director of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble .

Sette received her PhD in 1982 at La Sapienza University with Franco Bassani and Renzo Rosei in Rome and then worked as a post-doctoral student at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) of the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island from 1983 to 1984 . From 1984 to 1990 he was employed as a scientist at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill , New Jersey , and in this position he designed and operated the "Dragon" beamline at the NSLS. There he carried out important experiments on X-ray absorption spectroscopy in high-temperature superconductors , on X-ray circular dichroism in elementary metals and on molecular spectroscopy. From 1991 to 2001 he worked at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility as head of a research group on inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS). With a newly developed IXS spectrometer he achieved an energy resolution of a few meV and thus carried out experiments on the low-energy dynamics of liquids and glasses.

From 2001 to 2008, Sette was Research Director of the ESRF, and since 2009 he has been acting Director General there. For his pioneering work on inelastic X-ray scattering, he received the X-ray plaque from the city of Remscheid on April 6, 2019 .
